Assistant Professor
Institute of Polish Culture

Matylda Szewczyk is a cultural studies scholar researching the relationship between visual culture, science, and new technologies – specifically, how images depict (and contribute to shaping) both real and imagined scientific and technological breakthroughs. Her research places particular emphasis on reproductive medicine (fetal visualizations, assisted reproduction, reproduction of non-human entities) and how developments in this field influence perceptions of human identity, parenting practices, and the relationship between nature and culture. She is the author of the book W stronę wirtualności. Praktyki artystyczne kina współczesnego (Towards Virtuality: Artistic Practices of Contemporary Cinema, Warsaw, 2015) and a co-editor of Sztuka w kinie dokumentalnym (Art in Documentary Cinema, Warsaw, 2016) and Cięcie ciał. Ruchome obrazy (Cutting Bodies. Moving Images, Warsaw, 2018). She has published in Kwartalnik Filmowy, Widok: Theories and Practices of Visual Culture, Teksty Drugie, and Panoptikum. Head of the Department for Film and Visual Culture at the Institute of Polish Culture, University of Warsaw.
